Blog › Range of my EV at Cruising Speed
With internal combustion engines they usually operate most economically at around 80 km/h, in contrast to this an electric vehicle needs more energy the faster it drives. At lower speeds however it is the other way around. Vehicles with an internal combustion engine have a high thermal loss as the engine produces a lot of waste heat when stationary. An electric vehicle on the other hand has practically no thermal loss, so it consumes almost no energy at low speeds. This makes EV’s perfect for city commuters in New Zealand especially Auckland where speeds rarely get above 40 km/ph anywhere these days. If you are not sure if you can still reach your destination with your electric vehicle, it is advisable to drive as slow as possible and switch off any unnecessary power consumption extras such as heating and AC.
